A Message from Illinois Action for Children’s Leadership Team
As the leadership of Illinois Action for Children, an organization committed to building strong families and powerful communities™, we express our outrage at the horrifying, yet all-too-familiar racial injustice and police brutality that has violently ended yet another life.
As a society, we have witnessed far too many black lives taken by the very hands of those who took an oath to serve and protect us all. In Minneapolis, it was George Floyd. In Louisville, it was Breonna Taylor. In Chicago, it was Laquan McDonald. In many cities, large and small, across our nation there are names we know and names we don’t know. Stories of lives ended without any justification, dying voices of last words, “I can’t breathe.”
The pain, sadness, and anger being expressed right now is real and it is valid. As Frederick Douglass said, “where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.”
The systemic racism and injustice in our nation led to protest and civil unrest throughout Chicago and across the United States that continues at this very moment. We are saddened by the property damage that took place throughout the weekend. It is not the answer. Real change, however, requires confronting uncomfortable truths. The truths that are being exposed in our streets right now cannot wait. They should move us to take action to organize, advocate, and demand that racism be stopped wherever it exists.
You are still breathing and that is a gift. There is power in your voice and in your words—use them to bring about the changes that will benefit every child and all of our families. Stand up and speak out against racism.
Stay strong, stay united, and stay safe.
