Make a Lasting Difference for a Child, One Backpack at a Time
For all children, especially children under age 5, consistent reinforcement of what they are learning is essential for maintain and acquiring new skills. This is particularly true for children experiencing poverty.
However, during the summer months when school is out, it can be extremely challenging for children to maintain the skills they learned during the previous school year without access to a regular review and practice routine. Numerous reports and research studies that examine this loss of learning, also known as the “summer setback,” or “summer slide” show that children who fall behind before kindergarten, are far less likely to ever catch up.
Together, we can help to ensure that all 220 incoming and continuing preschoolers at Illinois Action for Children’s Early Learning Programs don’t fall behind by providing them with the educational resources they need to keep skills sharp over the summer.
