Name: Dr. Medina Bailey, Executive Director Organization: Nurturing Development Learning Academy II Location: South Holland Families Served: 93 families Why did you join the Child Care Works Campaign? The campaign came at a time when the state ran out of money to pay providers who use the Child Care Assistance Program. We thought it would be a good idea to show the community and our legislators how our center impacts parents, students, and local businesses. The Child Care Works tool gives a picture of Nurturing Development Learning Academy II’s important contribution to our community. How does your child care center contribute to your local economy? We provide care for 158 children from 93 families. Parents earned over $1,716,000 in income and paid $308,880 in taxes. Our 23 employees paid $69,506 in income and social security taxes. We purchased $85,548 worth of goods and services from local businesses this past year. This boosted our local economy by $1,481,995. How have you shared the Child Care Works tool to spread the message on child care as a critical economic investment? We have used our Child Care Works tool to educate our legislators about how child care matters to our families, community, and local economy. When we show legislators our economic impact tool, they are immediately surprised to learn about how much we contribute to the community. Legislators don’t often know how deeply our work impacts the community. Using this tool to educate legislators, we are able to show the economic importance of early care and education for the community and the families we serve every day. The Child Care Works Campaign gives child care providers the opportunity to demonstrate the importance of their child care programs to their local communities and economy. This tool gives each child care provider resources to effectively speak to their legislators and advocate for the protection of child care programs in the state, educate community members about the benefits of child care, and build new relationships with each other and members of their community.
